My Journey

Hello! I'm John Broda and I am an Instructional Designer and Performing Artist. I am currently teaching at SMU: Meadows School of the Arts and earning my MFA in Acting. Previous to coming to SMU, I earned my M.Ed. in Instructional Design and eLearning from Southern Wesleyan University.

My instructional design journey began in 2015 when I was hired by the Spring Arbor University (SAU) eLearning Team as an Instructional Support team member. In my work I assisted the instructional design team members with various projects. Since I was a student at the time, being privy to a behind the scenes look at my education gave me a deeper appreciation for the inner workings of higher education. During my time with the SAU eLearning team, I found a place in which I could satisfy my love for collaborative work.

My love for collaboration originated from my work as a theatre artist. In the theatre, I learn abundantly more through clear communication and the collaborative process than I ever could on my own, this is no different in instructional design. It is my belief that the best learning experiences are created through humility and creative collaboration with team members.

In 2020, I began to meld my passion for theatre and education by pursing my M.Ed. in Instructional Design and eLearning. I do not find it difficult to meld my two passions of mine, because I have always seen how the two interrelate. Prior to graduating with my M.Ed. I was hired on as a part-time Instructional Designer at Dordt University. It was there that I started to truly apply my skills from both fields I love. I created video tutorials, reviewing courses for faculty, offered faculty new learning tools or ways to engage students, and worked with the ID team to make the design process more efficient and helpful for faculty. These experiences taught me how much I love to collaborate with others to find the best effective creative solutions. In the fall of 2022, I resigned from my part-time ID job to pursue my MFA in Acting at SMU: Meadows School of the arts, where I currently teach The Art of Acting, a face-to-face acting course to introduce students to the fundamentals of acting. Every new experience I have teaches me that each learner is unique. Educators should constantly be ready and open to adapt to the needs of their learners and meet them where they are at. It is my job to help bridge the gap between faculty knowledge and learner's needs. My experience in the arts and education are the reason I am able to create meaningful, accessible, and equitable learning experiences for all learners. To see some of my work, check out Projects
